چکیده
Visual storytelling describes the communication of stories through illustrations, graphics, imagery, and video instead of, or in addition to, oral, written, audio formats. Compared to their popularity wide reach, empirical research on map-based visual remains limited. We work towards infilling this gap an study data journalism, providing first assessment four emerging design considerations for with maps: story map themes constituent narrative elements, genres, tropes, individual audience differences. Specifically, we recruited 125 participants online study, requiring them separately review two respond a series free-response Likert scale questions regarding retention, comprehension, reaction. followed 2×2×2 factorial stories, varying (US presidential campaign donations, US coastal sea-level rise), genres (longform infographic, dynamic slideshow), tropes (color highlighting, leader lines), while holding other dimensions constant. The theme did not influence participants’ total retention indicating that three-act its elements can be applied consistently effectively across variable kinds topics. Instead, and, weaker degree, influenced participant pointing importance intentional storytelling. Participants overall performed better when designs used longform infographics “scrollytelling” (genres) structure content lines (tropes) visually accent information. In contrast, reaction, feeling significantly more concerned about upset donations compared rise story. Individual differences by expertise, motivation, prior beliefs also Our signals need establishing education agenda both cartography journalism.

Visual Storytelling
We introduce the first dataset for sequential vision-to-language, and explore how this data may be used for the task of visual storytelling. The first release of this dataset, SIND1 v.1, includes 81,743 unique photos in 20,211 sequences, aligned to both descriptive (caption) and story language. We establish several strong baselines for the storytelling task, and motivate an automatic metric to ...

In this paper, we introduce the concept of Visual Storytelling Warehouse, an interactive XML-based automatic cartoonstyle visual storytelling system to generate new stories based on written story structures and user’s requirements. The Warehouse will consist of the visual and no-visual elements including characters, events, background images, and story plots. Each of these elements will be asso...
متن کاملBig Data Storytelling Through Interactive Maps
Google Fusion Tables (GFT) brings big data collaboration and visualization to data-experts who possess neither large data-processing resources nor expertise. In this paper we highlight our support for map visualizations over large complex geospatial datasets. Interactive maps created using GFT have already been used by journalists in numerous high-profile stories.
متن کاملVisual Navigation with Schematic Maps
A prototypical example of the operational dimensions of visual information communication is the use of schematic maps for visual navigation. The implementation of maps on location-sensitive or handheld devices has changed the preliminaries of common mapping techniques. By an analysis of selected examples, both historic and current, we want to open up the space for innovative map design options....
